It was widely reported by the South African Weather Service that a village in the Northern Cape has broken the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in South Africa. However, it is now stated that the village in the Northern Cape hasn’t broken the record for the highest temperature rcorded in South Africa. The former report stated that a maximum temperature of 50.1 degrees Celsius was found in the Vioolsdrif on Thursday.
It was discovered that the temperature sensor was just replaced two days before. The SA Weather service says, “Investigations into the data from the station revealed that the temperature sensor had just been replaced two days prior, and a decision was made to track the behaviour of the station over the weekend. The analysis of this data showed that the behaviour of the temperature sensor was questionable and the preliminary temperature reading of 50.1 degrees Celsius as a new record is therefore invalid.”
Mbhavi Maliage, the SA Weather Service, recently stated that the village broke its own Thursday record on Friday when it reached a maximum of 53.2 degrees Celsius. The number was rounded off to 54 degrees Celsius. Storm Report SA and Planet Earth also reported the supposed record, according to Business Insider. However, Storm Report SA stated on social media that the weather station might have been faulty at the time the temperature was taken down.
