The students of the University of Zululand students have staged a protest after one of their fellow colleagues was shot at his off-campus rental cottage on Sunday. The students reportedly believe that the student was shot by a notorious gang known as ‘Amadabuka’, the student is currently in hospital fighting for his life. The gang allegedly attacks students that live off the university’s off campus facilities.

The students were also allegedly marching for better infrastructures. Police officers allegedly also came to the institution. Some tweeps laid their frustrations towards the happenings near and in the university’s vicinity. One tweep says, “At University of Zululand students are getting killed every day…Zwide is fighting for his life now [in hospital] because of thugs and the University doesn’t care about our safety. Students are getting raped [in toilets] and the University cant and doesn’t want to upgrade security.” One tweep commented on the infamous “O jewa ke eng” post.

The tweep says, “Students at the at the University of Zululand are dying daily but nobody is helping because it’s situated in the rural areas unlike UCT and Wits. Burglars are breaking in the student residences and take the students’ belongings. When we deny they shoot us.” Some students feel as if the media doesn’t care about the students that learn at the institution.

One tweep says, “The silence of media on the issue of the safety of the Univeristy of Zululand students is very loud. If it was any top notch Universityit would be all over the media. But since the Unizulu is a comprehensive rural-based university nothing is being said.” One tweep says, “This is what University of zululand students are subjected to. The silence of the media nd organs of the state is too loud!!!”
