A Durban University of Technology pupil is in a severe state as he was brutally assaulted and stabbed. The student, 18-year-old Sandile Ndlovu, is a first year Industrial Engineering pupil at the institution. According to Tshepo Mokoena, a family spokesperson, the student was assaulted in a lecture room at the Steve Biko campus. The pupil still in the Intensive Care Unit.

According to ‘The South African’, the university states that they didn’t have security guards inside the lecture venue. The university also states that it is working with police authorities with regards to the examination. “The university is assisting the South African Police Service with its ongoing investigation into the attack that resulted in the 18-year-old’s hospitalisation. The student services department remains in daily contact with Mr Ndlovu’s family and the entire university community is praying for Sandile during this challenging time,” says the Durban University of Technology.

Pupils from the Durban University of Technology have requested that the campus be closed down due to their fellow student’s incident. The pupils have closed off the entrances to the campus and want answers from the tertiary institution. Thamsanqa Memela, the SRC President at the institution, says that students are angry and they are not feeling secure anymore. Tweeps also laid out their frustrations.

One tweep says, “…I don’t understand why Universities still don’t have CCTV cameras all around campus. I mean, Every University Should Know Everything That Happens On Campus.” One tweep says, “No student should feel or be unsafe inside school or outside school premises.” One tweep says, “As much as we are losing Women and Girls we are also losing Men and Boys, this has to be addressed also.” Some tweeps were frustrated by misleading news that stated the student has passed away. There was no reported arrest as of yet.
