The road traffic management corporation has stated that an estimate of two million South African drivers are using fraudulent licenses. Advocate Makhosini Msibi, the Road Traffic Management Corporation chief executive advocate, says Mpumalanga has a decline of R574 million because of fraudulent activities between driving schools and members of the traffic department. The statement was released on Friday.
Nine individuals, involving three members of the Department Community Safety Security and Liason by Chief Albert Luthuli municipality traffic department were apprehended on the day. Three of the people that were apprehended are external citizens. The Road Traffic Management Corporation also found out that there were three youths who were given driver’s licenses on Thursday. “This is an ongoing operation which commenced in 2016, when we found out that foreign nationals from all over the country went to to this testing station,” says Advocate Makhosini Msibi.
The testing station was in Elukwatini. The Road Traffic Management Corporation chief executive advocate says that there were supposed plans of setting the testing station aflame in order to hide any evidence of criminal activity. He also went on to say one of the members of ran away when they doing the apprehensions. They are also still looking at the inclusion of driving schools in the matter. Makhosini Msibi says the people that were apprehended will be looking at corruption charges. Mpumalanga has lost R574 million and one in Secunda has lost R67 million between 2016 and 2019.
“It is known that in this testing station for a driver’s license people are paying almost R14 000. It’s quite rampant corruption taking place in this testing station and this is one of the operations we will be doing all around the country in September and October,” says Advocate Makhosini Msibi. He says the government has been having a decline in money due to the illegal activities of licencing. Internal disciplinary measures have been taken against the department officials that were caught in Secunda and Elukwatini.
