The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned an incident in which a one-year-old died after Thuso Moalafi, 32, set alight a house on Saturday, 8 December 2018 at Phatshima Section in Dinokana village near Lehurutshe.
The accused allegedly arrived home at about 20:00. According to information available at this stage, reports suggest that the accused allegedly sprinkled the bed with paraffin and set it alight following an alleged dispute with his girlfriend. The girlfriend managed to rescue two of the three children who were inside the house while the third one burnt to death.
The matter was reported to the police who responded swiftly and arrested the accused who appeared in the Lehurutshe Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 10 December 2018 for murder and arson. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Tuesday, 18 December 2018.
The Provincial Commissioner commended the police for their quick response and said that there will be no hesitation to deal effectively with those who commit crimes against women and children which is a priority. She said that it is disturbing that the incident occurred during 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
