POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service in Limpopo arrested one thousand eight hundred and thirty one (1831) suspects aged between 23 and 50 during the festive season joint operations which were conducted until this morning in all the Districts of this Province.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes that include burglaries, assault, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, Contravention of Road Traffic Act, rape, murder, business robbery, common robbery, sexual offences, stock theft, fraud, possession and dealing in drugs etc.

The operations comprised of members of the Police from the Detectives, Public Order Police Unit, the Limpopo Highway Patrol Team (LHP), Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Crime Intelligence, Organised Crime Unit and Narcotics Unit, Traffic Police and other role players.

The operations secured the following successes and confiscations : 73 x firearms, 11 x suspected stolen motor vehicles, 25,3811 x cartons of illicit cigarettes, 32 x dangerous weapons, 523.8 grams of dagga, 23 dagga plants, 1486 grams of nyaope drugs, 05 grams of heroin drugs, 11x knives and liquor.

Last night, Sunday 06 December 2020, the LHP arrested five suspects in various areas. In Lebowakgomo, a 29-year-old man was arrested for possession of and dealing in illicit cigarettes and recovered twenty cartons of illicit cigarettes and also a 31-year-old woman was arrested for assult on Police, Crimen injuria and defeating the ends of justice. In Roedtan, along the N11 road between Mokopane and Roedtan, two suspects were arrested for possession of twenty one crocodile eggs and three crocodile scales (skin). These suspects were charged with possession of suspected stolen property, Contravention of the Endanged species Act and Illegal immigration Act. At one of the malls in the City of Polokwane, a 26-year-old man was arrested for possession of dagga and twenty one sachets dagga was recovered.

In a private game farm under the Gravelotte Policing area outside Phalaborwa in the Mopani District, the Anti-poaching Unit has intercepted illegal hunting syndicate and confiscated two rifles, 25 rifle ammunition, 01 x axe, 01 x knife and 01 x pair of binoculars.

In the Vhembe District, the Police arrested two suspects aged 30 and 40 for murder and business robberies. Their arrest comes after the Police received a tip-off from members of the community regarding a planned business robbery at Lwamondo Mathule post office. The members’ swift action lead to the arrest of two suspects.

Following the intensive investigations, one of these suspects aged 30 was positively linked to other cases of business robberies and murder in and around the area. The duo might be linked to more cases as the profiling is still underway.

In the Waterberg District, the Police in Northam received information about the suspects who were in possession of suspected stolen livestock. The information was operationalised and one suspect aged 36 was arrested for possession of stolen livestock while his accomplices alighted from a White Nissan bakkie and fled after noticing the police. Two cattle were recovered.

During these operations, the Police maximized their presence by engaging in a variety of activities including, 280 road blocks and 6086 stop and searches. 1550 road Traffic summons were issued, 37 308 persons were searched, 17 253 motor vehicles were searched while 07  non-compliant shebeens were closed down.

The suspects arrested during these operations are expected to appear before different magistrate courts throughout the Province.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba hailed the successful operations conducted accros the Province and further encouraged members of the South African Police Service in all levels of command to stamp authority in all the crime infested areas to ensure a safe and secure festive season period.

Members of the community are applauded for their valuable assistance in providing positive and reliable information to the Police leading to this milestone achievement, concluded General Ledwaba.
