Police warn that vigilante acts will not be tolerated: Dutywa - Eastern Cape

Dutywa detectives are seeking the community’s assistance in arresting those involved in the murder and assault of two males who allegedly tried to rob a businesswoman at Gwadana Location outside Dutywa.

It is alleged that on 23 July 2021, the owner of a shop was opening her business when the two males approached and tried to rob her.  The community members witnessed the incident and went to her assistance. They chased after the suspects and apprehended them. Police were alerted and on arrival they found the two males severely assaulted. One male was already dead and the other one was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating a case of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm respectively.

The Acting Amathole District Commissioner Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu is warning the community not to take the law into their own hands. ‘Vigilantism cannot be a justifiable act of punishment for anyone. Mob justice is not a solution and will not be tolerated. The community need to work with the police and to report all criminal behaviour to law enforcement and stop acts of vigilantism,’ warned Brig Xakavu

Anyone who can assist police in tracing the suspects is asked to contact SAPS Dutywa or SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
