PARKTOWN – Addressing crime related to essential infrastructure remains a top priority for the South African Police Service (SAPS).

On Friday, 08 July 2022 police in Gauteng arrested a 34-year-old man for possession of essential infrastructure in Elandsfontein and recovered property belonging to Telkom with an estimated value of R10 million.

Members of the Provincial Head Office’s Firearm, Liquor and Second hand Goods (FLASH) office operationalised information they obtained and proceeded to the identified address in Elandsfontein.

The SAPS members were initially denied access to the company and members of the Ekurhuleni District FLASH office, Essential Infrastructure Task Team and other role players were called for backup.

A search led the team to recover contact and catenary wires which was identified to be the property of Telkom.

Provincial Commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela welcomed the recent successes achieved in terms of essential infrastructure related crime. “It is evident that members of the South African Police Service are committed in fighting the scourge of essential infrastructure related crime. This type of crime has both an impact on the economy of the country and the livelihoods of its citizens,” said Lt Gen Mawela.
