A 23-year-old man, Mandla Amos Tau, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mkobola Magistrate’s Court yesterday, 10 September 2019, for raping his friend’s girlfriend.
The incident took place on 06 July 2015, at Kwaggafontein. The court heard that on that fateful day, the 20-year-old woman (victim) had slept over at her boyfriend’s place when she heard a knock at the door just after her boyfriend had left for work in the morning. When she opened, she saw Tau who alleged that he was sent by his friend to collect something. He went inside and pretended to be looking for something, when he suddenly took out a knife, pushed her into the bed and raped her.
Soon after, Tau insisted that he would accompany her home to ensure that she does not inform anyone about the incident on her way. When she arrived home, she started crying and informed her sister about what had happened. Her sister accompanied her to the police station where she reported the matter. Tau was located and arrested on the same day.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma applauded the members of the dignified blue for their sterling work in ensuring that justice is done. He stated that the sentence will without doubt serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.
