MOUNT FRERE – Diligent investigation by Detective Sgt Siyabonga Msindwana attached to Mount Frere SAPS Detectives was handsomely rewarded when Mount Frere Regional Court convicted and sentenced two men, Baxolele Mxabo, 30 and 29-year-old Wanda Dzingwe to two life imprisonment for murder and twenty years imprisonment for robbery which happened on 27 November 2018. The third suspect involved in the matter turned state witness.

The sentence will run concurrently and both suspects were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

This hefty sentences follows the murder and robbery of a 55-year-old man which happened at the home of the deceased at Mount Frere on the evening of 17 December 2018. The deceased had received a payout from the Road Accident Fund when the attack happened.

It is alleged three male suspects entered his home and demanded money from him. They tied and suffocated him with paraffin soaked cloth and tortured him while demanding that he give them his bank account cards and pin.

He eventually gave in, and handed his bank card and pin and the suspects went ahead and withdrew money from his account. Upon their return later, they tortured him until he died. They further took his private belongings and fled the scene.

A case of murder and robbery was reported at Mount Frere SAPS and handed to Detective Sgt Msindwana for further investigations. While following hot leads he soon detected that the cellphone of the deceased was still being used which led him to one of the suspects.

The trio were arrested a month later and they were found in possession of the deceased’s personal belongings. The video footage from the bank where money was withdrawn from deceased’s bank account was also obtained, which also linked the accused to the cases under investigation.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga commended the investigation and court sentence. “Our detectives are filling an essential role investigating and presenting evidence in court. When they present high quality investigation, which helps the prosecution and courts to decide cases. We are grateful for good working relations between police, prosecution and the courts in pursuit and delivery of justice,” she added.
