On Wednesday 17 April 2019, 22-year-old Marlon Adonis, a member of the Hard Living gang was convicted in a plea agreement of murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and sentenced to 35 years in the Western Cape High Court.

Marlon Adonis was 20 years old when he shot and killed a 29-year-old man on Saturday 9 September 2017 at 06:00, while he was waiting for friends in Seine Walk Manenberg. Marlon Adonis without any warning or provocation, opened fire on the unsuspecting victim and shot him multiple times in the face, back of his head and upper body. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

Marlon fled the scene and the next day he was cornered in Scheldt Walk where he was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition. This was after reports by the community of several gunshots in the vicinity of Scheldt Walk. An additional charge of prohibited firearm was added. Ballistic testing was done on the firearm and was positively linked to the murder of the victim.

The firearm was also used in the murder of a 16 year old boy that was fatally wounded in Renoster Road Manenberg on the same day minutes later. The 16-year-old boy, a member of an opposing gang, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

The perpetrator of this murder, Farouk Oliver was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment and is currently serving his sentence.

Marlon Adonis was successfully charged, prosecuted and convicted by a dedicated team of Manenberg serious and violent crimes detectives who presented a prima facie case before the Western Cape High court.

He was sentenced to 18 years for murder and 10 years for the possession of the firearm and two years for the possession of ammunition. He was also successfully prosecuted under the POCA Act and sentenced to five years for being a member of a gang. These sentences will run concurrently and he will serve an effective 18 years direct imprisonment.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen KE Jula commends the members for working tirelessly investigating the criminal conduct of these perpetrators to ensure their convictions.
