Former Mpumalanga councillor to appear in court for defeating the ends of justice

A 41-year-old former Councillor of the Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality is expected to appear before the court after he was arrested today on charges of defeating the ends of justice.

Thulani Obed Shabangu, who is currently waiting for his trial to commence on 24 October 2019, on charges of corruption and fraud which include selling of houses, was arrested on 18 December 2018 and released on a R50 000 bail two days later, with conditions, amongst others, that he may not contact witnesses.

It is reported that the suspect violated one of the conditions of his bail and was arrested by the police in Amersfoort, as a result, he will appear tomorrow, 26 July 2019, at the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court.

Meanwhile, 12 men aged between 18 and 35, will appear at the Evander Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 26 July 2019, in connection with illegal mining activities.

Their arrest came after the Secunda Cluster Crime Intelligence Unit, K9 Unit and Vispol members were doing a joint operation to address the scourge of illegal mining in the area, today. During the arrest, it was discovered that most of the suspects are undocumented persons.

They are expected to appear at the above-mentioned court tomorrow, 26 July 2019 facing charges of illegal mining, trespassing and contravention of the Immigration Act (Act no 13 of 2002) charges.
