DURBAN – A 20-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrate’s Court soon after he was arrested for allegedly killing a mother (25) and her son (5) in Ulundi Township over the weekend.

It is alleged that yesterday afternoon, the tenants who are learners in one of the schools in Ulundi, arrived at the house and were greeted by an unbearable smell that was from one of the rooms. They found the suspect alone in the house. The suspect demanded that the tenants should pay rent to him since the deceased was not in the house, however, the tenants refused to give him the money.

They started searching for the deceased, Siphesihle Magwaza, also known as Msani (25) all over the house. She was found lying on the floor in her bedroom covered with a blanket and both feet were tied with a cloth.  The victim sustained multiple stab wounds all over the body. A search for the child was further conducted and the deceased child, Owami Magwaza (5) was found outside in the garage covered with a green bag. The baby boy had also sustained multiple stab wounds all over his body and his throat was slit. Both the victims and the suspect were staying in the same house.

The suspect (20) was immediately arrested at the scene and taken to Ulundi police station for further processing. The motive of the killing is unknown and will form part of an investigation.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula condemned the killing of the defenceless victims by the person who was expected to protect them. “We will ensure that a quality investigation is conducted and a well-prepared docket is sent to court for the suspect to receive the sentence he deserves,” he said.
