Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court that was sitting at Centane sentenced a 38-year-old man Msindisi Sonamzi to undergo 26 years imprisonment. The accused was sentenced on Tuesday, 28 May 2019 at Centane Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that the accused went to the residence of the 21-year-old woman who was student at Khobononqaba Locality, Nombanjane Village, Centane. The victim was sleeping alone at about 21h30. The accused dragged the victim to a nearby forest where he assaulted and raped the victim.
A case of rape was registered at Centane Police Station. The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). The case was properly and professionally investigated as the victim did not know the suspect.
The accused was traced and finally arrested on the 24th February 2018.
Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu congratulated and applauded the investigating officer for cracking the case. He also welcomed the sentence handed to the accused by the court.
