Gangsterism in Kensington was dealt a severe blow this morning when members of the Anti-Gang Unit pounced on a residence in 9th Avenue and confiscated firearms, ammunition and drugs.
Acting on intelligence, the AGU members conducted an operation which led to the arrest of two suspects, a 37-year-old male and a 25-year-old female for the illegal possession of an Uzzi submachine gun, two 9mm pistols, a .38 Special revolver, 616 rounds of various calibre ammunition and drugs comprising 2957 mandrax tablets, 478 gram tik and 2 gram cocaine. In addition R2600-00 cash believed to be the proceeds of crime was also confiscated.
The circumstances surrounding the arrests and discovery of the firearms as well as drugs are still under investigation while the suspects are awaiting their court appearance in Cape Town on Friday. The acting provincial commissioner of the Western Cape police, Major General Thembisile Patekile praised the arresting officers for moving a step forward in creating a safer environment for the inhabitants of this province, with the removal of armed criminals off the streets.
