Police in Gqeberha recovered firearms and arrested suspects - Eastern Cape

In our endeavours to reduce the proliferation of unlawful and illegal firearms, the unwavering commitment of every police officer is crucial in creating a safe and secure environment for our communities.

Three firearms with three arrests were effected today, 17 August 2021 by Anti-Gang Unit and SAPS Humewood members respectively.

At about 03:00 this morning, AGU members received and acted on information received about firearms at a house in Makhuphula Street in Zwide. The house was searched and a 35-year-old male was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.  A 9mm pistol and a toy gun was found. Ownership of the firearm is still be established.

In another unrelated incident, two suspects aged 36 and 39 were arrested in  Parliament Street, Central by patrolling SAPS Humewood members. It is alleged that at about 08:45, police spotted a metallic grey VW Polo parked, facing a wrong direction. They approached the vehicle and found the males, one standing next to the vehicle. On searching them, two firearms (both 9mm) were recovered.

Both males were detained on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. One firearm was reported stolen in Walmer in May 2021 while ownership of the other firearm is still to be ascertained.  The VW Polo was also confiscated by police. Detectives will be probing whether these suspects may be linked to other crimes in surrounding station areas.

All three suspects are expected to appear in their respective magistrate courts soon. The firearms will also be sent for ballistic analysis.

Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso applauded the arrests and confiscations. ‘It is imperative for everyone to play a persistent role in reducing the number of unlawful firearms in our communities. The unswerving eyes and ears of both the communities and the police will expose any suspicious or criminal activities in our areas,’ added Brig Kupiso.
