WESTERN CAPE – Two accused were kept in custody following their appearance in the Laingsburg Magistrates’ court after police seized drugs with an estimated street value of one million rand on the N1 at Laingsburg.

Laingsburg police members were strategically deployed on the N1 on Monday, 09 November 2020 at about 00:50 when they conducted a vehicle check point where they stopped a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi that was en-route to Cape Town from Qumbu in the Eastern Cape. A search of the vehicle ensued when the members found 54 bags consisting dagga inside as well as on the trailer of the minibus. The police confiscated 536 kilogram of dagga with an estimated street value of one million rand and arrested the driver as well as his passenger.

The accused, Xolani Mbuku (33) and Dinwayo Ncedeli (30) from Cape Town appeared in the local court on Tuesday, 10 November 2020 on charges of dealing in drugs. This matter was postponed to 18 November 2020 for bail information and the accused were remanded in custody.

Detectives attached to the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (Narcotics section) are investigating this matter. Preliminary investigation indicates that the drugs were destined for delivery in Cape Town.

Western Cape police management commended the members involved with the arrest and for their dedication in addressing drug trafficking especially along the major entry points into the province.
