Wits Students Protest Over Allegedly Being Forced To Sleep At Library. A video recording of learners sleeping in a library at the Wits University was posted by the tertiary institution’s student representative council on Wednesday.

A video recording of learners sleeping in a library at the Wits University was posted by the tertiary institution’s student representative council on Wednesday. They have also began protesting, requesting action to be made. The institution said again that free accommodation does not include the learners that have failed numerous times.

The Student Representative Council posted on Twitter about their reason for protesting along with a video recording of some students sleeping at the Library. “When we resort to other measures we do so because we have exhausted all other forms of engagement. A storm is coming. It cannot be that under our leadership students are subjected to these inhumane conditions. Our students will be accommodated,” says the Wits Student Representative Council.

A group of learners came together at the Empire Road entrance to the campus on Wednesday. The security was there due to reports that the learners were disturbing the bus functions. Some of the demonstrators started a sleep-in protest in one of the halls. At about 11:20am, a huge group of learners came together at the west campus of the institution, they were thus joined by some learners that were in class. Buhle Zuma, the Wits University spokesperson, says “They are protesting for free accommodation. Many of these students have failed multiple times and have thus lost their funding and accommodation for 2020.”
