A video of a woman who was getting her skin bleached made rounds on the internet. The video shows a woman who was getting her melanin of her skin. The woman in the viral video is from Nigeria.
The video shows the woman sitting in a bath of some ingredients, seemingly heated chemicals. Another woman is thus seen easily scrubbing the melanin off of the woman’s leg. The colour easily changed from melanin to pale. Some of the people on social media were in awe of what they saw on the graphic video. One tweep says, “Just saw that disturbing video of the lady bleaching her skin…are people wanting to die? I highly doubt that has no side effects & consequences.”“Ok so that video of that lady bleaching/ getting her skin peeled…what does she say when she gets home? Like what’s the plan,” says one tweep.
Some people let it be known that colourism is to blame for what the woman is doing. One tweep says, “Before we shame the person in the bleaching video and start throwing around tweets like “why would you do something so unsafe?” Let’s remember how colourist we are…” One tweep says, “That skin bleaching video is really stomach churning. Only reason I RT’ed it is because it’s necessary. Necessary that black people see & realise just how poisonous colorism is. The extreme lengths many black women (and some men) go through to not suffer from it.”
