The Department of Employment and Labour along with police officials ambushed a Chinese factory in Joburg. The factory was stated to have allegedly been making unlawful immigrants and underage people work hard labour. The police officials, Hawks and the Department of Employment and Labour all went in due to a tip-off about human tracking, which had them going to the Chinese factory.
They state that the people in the factory were underage people and unlawful immigrants that were allegedly used for coerced and cheap labour. The immigrants, allegedly from Malawi, were allegedly locked up behind huge steel gates at Beautiful City in Jobhannesburg. The company creates cotton for blankets. The Department of employment and Labour states that the organisation had 150 unlawful immigrant workers but one individual had documents.
The employees were not allowed to go around much and they set to pay every week, with an earning of R65 a day. The investigators also found that there were children that were under the age of 15-years-old. There were no contracts compiled for the workers to sign, there were illegal wage reductions and people wouldn’t be paid for overtime. When the workers ask for leave, they will be fired by the bosses.
The workers are said to have allegedly been locked up in the high steel structure from dusk till dawn, when they wanted to head to the shops, they would be expected to write down what they needed from the shops on paper so that the employers could go purchase the items for them. The boss was apprehended by authorities for breaching several labour and immigration laws, health regulations and child labour legislations.
