Over 100 RDP Houses In Khayelitsha, Western Cape, Are Still Not Completed since 2012. Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape, has over 100 RDP houses that have still not been completed since 2012.

Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape, has over 100 RDP houses that have still not been completed since 2012. The people living in the RDP houses are living without gutters, toilet doors and ceilings. 60-year-old Nomakhazi Silayi states that she has no funds to purchase building material for her RDP house at Town Two.The 60-year-old states that she is waiting for the government to complete the house. “I’m waiting for government to finish building the house because I’m too old to raise money to do so myself,” says Nomakhazi Silayi.

The woman and her family members went into their RDP house in 2015, she states that harsh winds blow the roof tiles off and the windows have no handles. 43-year-old Bulelani Mgcuwe says the City of Cape Town constructed his house and put in window frames without window panes in 2012. He went on to say that the windows were installed one year after but then the window frames were impaired. He moved into the house to safeguard it even though it was incomplete because criminals stole the doors from the house. Builder and chairperson of Siyifumene People’s Housing Project, Alfred Kwaaiman, stated that he has been constructing RDP houses in Town Two from 2012, according to Ground Up.

He then went on to say that the organisation that was providing them with some of the building materials has closed down, impacting over 136 houses. He says the people living in the houses have went into the houses before the houses were completed. Acting Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements, Felicity Purchase, says the organisation that was in charge of the housing project has gone into liquidation, now the City of Cape Town and the western Cape government have started a procedure to finish the outstanding houses. Felicity Purchase says, “The Western Cape Government is finalising the funding process for some of the units after which construction will be completed.”
