Shoprite’s Plan Of Opening Smaller Stores Near Consumers’ Homes Divides Twitter. It was recently reported that supermarket giant Shoprite has plans of opening smaller stores that are close to the homes of its consumers.

It was recently reported that supermarket giant Shoprite has plans of opening smaller stores that are close to the homes of its consumers. The stores will be giving consumers a limited amount of basic food items that offer lower prices for consumer with a low income. The shops will be almost similar to the famous Usave ekasi stores, they will also be within containers. The news have left some tweeps divided, with some saying that the store will be providing jobs for the people in communities.

Some tweeps felt as if the shops would have had more impact if it offered the shops as franchises or offered partnerships. One tweep says, “This would have been quite impactful if Shoprite rolled this out as a franchising strategy that empowered local traders previously collapsed by Shoprite and foreign traders entry into the townships.” One tweep says, “I think communities need to make a firm appeal to municipalities and regulators to prevent ShopRite from setting up their spazas on the basis of competition, as part of the SMME reviltalization programmes by [the government]…”

Other tweeps were all for having the smaller Shoprite stores. One tweep says, “Not saying shopping at Shoprite is great but at least they won’t be selling fong kong products for starters & it’s structured & controlled environment for some degree of food safety & help standards. Small container like shop welcomed in my neighbourhood.” One tweep says, “I would have agreed if the township economy was still with our people but 90% are foreigners and they do not even employ locals so at least shoprite will provide job opportunities.”
