The Hartswater Police are investigating an inquest into the death of a 3-year-old boy. It is alleged that Monday, 24 June 2019 at about 15:30, the boy and his 10-year-old cousin was playing close the canal at the Riemvasmaak Shanties in Hartswater. It is however not clear whether the boy jumped or slipped into the canal which allegedly caused him to drown. The 10-year old boy ran for help and the police was contacted.

The SAPS also humbly request that the community adhere to the following water safety tips during this holiday period and beyond:
•Never walk closely along the edge of canals, dams, rivers and swamps.
•Children must always be under elders’ supervision when going near water areas.
•Parents also need to educate children on the dangers and safety of being in and around water areas.
•Empty paddling pools, bath tubs of water containers after use, as children might get enticed to play in the water.
•Never jump into the water in attempt of rescuing someone if you don’t know how to swim.
